Coleman is from Lancashire. Coleman attended Arnold School in Blackpool where she was the head girl. She also scored straight A's in her A-levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman was the replacement for Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor since Arthur Darvill left the series and was to play the role with Matt Smith.
